3 Easy Ways to Avoid Illness This Thanksgiving

This time of year sees an increase in both stomach illnesses and flu, which can put a severe damper on your holiday festivities. Here are some quick tips to help you and your loved ones stay in top shape around the Thanksgiving holiday.

  1. Wash Your Hands
  2. If you plan on traveling or going to public venues, be sure to wash your hands frequently. Airports, hotels, theaters and the like put you in contact with large groups of people, which will increase your risk of getting sick. According to the CDC, washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs.

  3. Refrigerate Leftovers Immediately
  4. Harmful bacteria begin to multiply rapidly in food if it is left unrefrigerated for over 2 hours. For Thanksgiving it is a good idea to set a timer and refresh any food left out with a fresh set once you pass the 120-minute mark.

  5. Avoid Unpasteurized Cider
  6. Hot apple cider is a popular holiday drink, but unpasteurized cider may carry E.coli and other harmful bacteria. It’s strongly recommended that you only buy the pasteurized version, particularly if you plan on serving it to children, the elderly or anyone with a weakened immune system.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and stay safe!
